INTER-Agency Council for Traffic Chairman Thomas “Tim” Orbos called on all traffic divisions of Local Government Units nationwide to prepare a more efficient traffic management system that will address parking issues and the free flow of traffic during the Undas long weekend.
“Kailangan tayo sa gobyerno ay gumawa ng paraan upang maibsan ang mabigat na daloy ng trapiko. Taun-taon na lang ‘yan nararanasan ng mga Pilipino. In this moment of remembrance, let’s make mobility easy for people. National agencies can do its part but the local government holds more accountability as they are more familiar with the situation in their specific areas of responsibility.” Orbos, in a statement, said.
Orbos, at the same time, emphasizes the need to clear the roads leading to the cemeteries of obstructions to pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
“Undas is all about people, not motorists, flocking to cemeteries to be with their departed loved ones. Therefore, our actions should be directed in bringing utmost safety and comfort to them,” he noted.
Undas, or All Saints’ Day (November 1) and All Souls’ Day (November 2), is one of the most attended Philippine holidays where Filipinos visit their deceased loved ones. This year, Undas falls on a Thursday and Friday resulting to a longer weekend for Filipino families. Heavy traffic is expected to be one of the effects of this holiday.
IACT is composed of the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Land Transportation Office (LTO), Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), Philippine National Police – Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), traffic divisions from local government units, and the Liga ng mga Barangay ng Pilipinas (LNB).
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) are also active participants of IACT in order to sustain intensive operations.
Many efforts have already been put in place even a month before Undas which include among others the mobilization of the HPG to ensure the security of our roads. Coordination meetings have also been set with several LNB sectors to discuss issues concerning their localities; the LNB is also tasked to effectively assist the public on the ground.
On Undas week, Teams Alpha and Bravo from the IACT National Office will be manning the traffic flow on major cemeteries in the North and South of Metro Manila.
Meanwhile, Orbos encourages Filipinos to maximize their transportation by using the high-occupancy vehicles (HOV) lanes to bring more people with less vehicles on the road.
