THE Quezon City Environmental Protection and Waste Management Department recently launched a new recycling campaign to combat the use of single-use plastics at the city hall compound.

Dubbed as Waste Market Program, the campaign is part of EPWMD’s thrust in promoting proper solid waste management in Quezon City.

Under the program, city hall employees and nearby residents can trade a kilo of single-use plastic bottles to a reusable water bottle at the Materials Recovery Facility inside the city hall compound.

According to EPWMD chief Frederika Rentoy, the waste market encourages the use of reusable containers instead of single-use plastics.

“We have been implementing this program in the past. Dati every last Friday of the month lang pero ngayon, every Friday na. To encourage employees na magdala ng reusable containers lalo na sa mga meetings. Ang gusto natin, ay mawala na ang PET bottles sa city hall,” Rentoy said.

The environment protection department also eyes a similar program to be implemented in the city’s 142 barangays.

The Materials Recovery Facilities is a facility inside the city hall compound that recycles decommissioned office equipment and other similar wastes.

The donated plastic bottles will be retrieved by an accredited agency for recycling.
