PH Commission on Election official caught while allegedly selling illegal drugs

A COMMISSION on Elections official and another person were arrested in Cagayan De Oro City by agents of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency after he allegedly sold methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu to an undercover agent last Wednesday.

The report of the arrest came after PDEA Director General Aaron Aquino had expressed suspicions that some government officials and employees were helping international illegal drugs syndicates peddle illegal their “deadly merchandise” in the country. Jose Mari Villar Fernandez, a resident of Cagayan De Oro City was nabbed by PDEA agents led by the agency’s Regional Office X (PDEA ROX) chief, Director Wilkins Villanueva, during a buy-bust operation near his home in Bloomingdale Subdivision, Barangay Iponan. He is currently in-charge of the COMELEC office in Gitagum, Misamis Oriental.

Seized from the 40-year old election official during the operation were five transparent plastic sachets containing suspected shabu, weighing 10.219 grams worth PhP68,000, and one mobile phone.

Aquino said Fernandez will be charged for violation of Section 5 (Sale of Illegal Drugs), Article II of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. He is currently detained at PDEA ROX jail facility in Cagayan de Oro City.

Meanwhile, on the same day, Villanueva’s team arrested in the same city another suspected drug dealer, Clint Abaday Pagapulaan, alias Clintoy, 40. Allegedly found in his possession were a sachet of suspected shabu worth PhP200 and a mobile phone.

Both Fernandez and Pagapulaan, who are detained at the PDEA ROX, will be facing charges of violation of the provision of Republic Act 9165 (The Dangerous Drugs Act).
