IN AN effort to alleviate the expected heavier flow of traffic during Christmas season, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and mall owners and operators have agreed to start mall operations an hour before noon and close sixty minutes before midnight starting October 15 to January 15 next year.

The agreement was made following a consultative meeting at the MMDA main office in Makati City.

MMDA Assistant General Manager for Planning Jojo Garcia said that in addition to the late opening of malls, stock deliveries for these mega-stores shall be made only between 11 pm. and 5 am. to lessen the number of vehicles plying the streets of Metro Manila, especially during the day’s rush hours.

The only exemption to this rule is the delivery of perishable materials.

Last month, the MMDA and the same mall owners and operators have agreed beginning Oct. 15 to only conduct mall sales during weekends.

MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim said these measures would help reduce traffic congestion, especially during payday Friday.

Lim, at the same time, appealed to the public to start their holiday shopping early.

“Let’s enjoy the coming holidays and at the same time, konting tiis. Kailangan natin ang kooperasyon ng lahat, ng mall owners at operators at ng publiko. Planuhin ang biyahe ngayong Kapaskuhan,” Lim stressed.

Meanwhile, mall owners and operators welcomed the MMDA move.

“We support MMDA’s efforts to ease traffic as Christmas nears. It is good for the public. It will also be good for business,” they said.
