PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday fired Dangerous Drug Board Chairman Benjamin Reyes for contradicting his statistics on the actual number of drug users nationwide.
Brooking no opposition to his figure of four million drug dependents, Duterte unceremoniously fired Reyes for giving the wrong figure of drug users in a recent interview. He said being just a civilian member of the board, Reyes cannot contradict his own government.
“You are fired today. Get out of the service. You do not contradict your own government. You are just a civilian member of the board. You are not an implementer of the law,” Duterte said.
The President added that “the correct count is the police and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.”
Before he was fired, Reyes gave a press interview and said there is at least 1.8 million drug users but he also reportedly added having information that the number can go up to 3 million or 4 million.
The real number of drug users in the Philippines has been contested since Duterte took power last year.
