AS hundreds of people protest against the outcome of the election in the US, activists from Socialist Alternative group claim that the Democratic Party should have taken more decisive steps to prevent Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump from becoming the new American president.

NEW YORK (Sputnik) — Donald Trump’s election as US president is the result of the opposition Democratic Party’s incompetence and corruption, a member of the activist group Socialist Alternative, Joshua Koritz, told Sputnik during an anti-Trump rally in New York City.

“The Democratic Party has proven they are incapable of stopping Trump. The Democratic Party has failed. This election just showed that [the party’s leadership] cared more about defeating Bernie than Trump,” Koritz said Wednesday evening.

He was referring to Vermont senator Bernie Sanders, who unsuccessfully battled Trump rival Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination but faced resistance from party leaders.

In post-election protests throughout New York, hundreds gathered in Manhattan’s Union Square to express opposition to Trump and discontent with the Democratic establishment.

Socialist Alternative, which focuses its activism on issues of worker rights and opposition to global capitalism, says both major US political parties favor big business over ordinary citizens.
