LOVERS and fans of the Original Pilipino Music (OPM) should thank the late Snaffu Rigor, a former SuperBand member, for inspiring legends of the 1970s OPM to stage a one-night only concert called “Yugyugan Nation!” on Nov. 23 in Resorts World Manila’s Newport Performing Arts Theater.
In an interview, Freddie Santos, Yugyugan Nation! concert director, said the idea of the one-night gig started in the wake of Rigor, who died recently.
“Somebody said why don’t we hold an OPM concert and pay tribute to Snaffu. And all of those invited to join the concert said yes,” Santos said.
“To the very young ones, yugyugan is from the word yugyug, which in the 1970s meant to dance,” Santos said.
“We, Filipinos, love music. We love to dance. On Nov. 23, all of those who will be at the concert will be one and united in having fun,” Santos said.
“Among the highlights of the Yugyugan Nation! is a special production number by all participating singers and groups to pay homage to Snaffu,” Santos said.
Sonny Parsons, of the Hagibis group, said the OPM retrospective will assemble on one stage the Philippines’ biggest hitmakers in the 1970s and 1980s.
“Each of the participating OPM group will have a chance to perform their signature songs and do production numbers,” Parsons said.
Rock singer and icon Sampaguita said “OPM singers of our time did not resort to touching our bodies and similar gestures to showcase our talents.” Sampaguita will appear in the concert as a special guest.
Under the musical direction of Butch Miraflor, the following will be featured: Gary Arriola and Bob Guzman of Boyfriends; Parsons of Hagibis, SuperBand members, Nonoy Tan and Rey Magtoto of Wadab, Mon Espia of Labuyo, Jun and Nitoy Mallillin of Abrakadabra, Monet Gaskell and Male Rigor of VST and Co.
“The Pinoy disco revolution took the country by storm in the early 1970s. And for over a decade, proved to be one of the main catalysts that made OPM what it is today: vibrant and infectious. Even today’s generation has familiarized itself with immortal songs such as Rock Baby Rock by VST and Co., Sumayaw, Sumunod by Boyfriends, Bote at Dyaryo by Abrakadabra,” Resorts World Manila said in a news release.
“With the formation of the 1970s SuperBand in 2010, a collective of 1970s music purveyors consisting of Nonoy Tan and Rey Magtoto of Wadub; Mon Espia of Labuyo; Jun and Nitoy Mallillin of Abrakadabra; and Monet Gaskell and Male Rigor of VST and Co., the 1970s Philippine disco vibe was instantly revived,” the release said.
“Suddenly, interest began pouring in for the awesome music of yesteryears,” it said.
