PRESIDENT Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s allies were elected Senate President and House Speaker during the opening of Congress on Monday, hours before his the 1st State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel of Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) was elected senate president. Except for Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, who was not present during the vote, 23 senators participated in the senate leadership election.

On the other hand, Davao del Norte’s 1st district Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez was chosen by his colleagues to be the House Speaker. Out of the total 292 members of the House of Representatives, 285 were present to participate in the election of the House leadership.

The election of Pimental and Alvarez, political pundits observed, would make the passage of Duterte’s legislative agenda quite easy.
